Bexley has been one of the highest recyclers in London for many years. This success is underpinned by its comprehensive urban cutting-edge recycling services, the Council's corporate processes that drive performance, and use of imaginative ways to ensure that all sections of the community are actively engaged in recycling.

Beacon Council 2004-2005, Crime and Disorder Partnerships

2004-2005
Crime and Disorder Partnerships

Bexley was one of only nine Councils chosen to be awarded Beacon status for its success in cutting anti-social behaviour and crime. As well as gaining the award Bexley Community Safety Partnership received a special mention for its partnership working, particularly with the local community.

2002-2003
Improving Urban Green Spaces

The DTLR said "Bexley display a diverse range of green spaces, and possess a clear vision and simple strategy to improve them. Schemes like Local Agenda 21 and "Environment Challenge" for school children demonstrate a proactive approach to partnerships with the public, private and voluntary sectors".

Beacon Council 2002-2003, Fostering Business Growth

2002-2003
Fostering Business Growth

The Advisory Panel reported that Bexley demonstrated a sound approach to Fostering Business Growth, and the Economic Development Strategy. The Council makes use of consultation, its website and local press; has good links and partnerships with other agencies; and has a significant asset in the Belvedere Business Centre, which provides support for new businesses.

Beacon Council 2001-2002, Foster Care

2001-2002
Foster Care

Whilst maintaining a child care policy of retaining children wherever possible within their families, Bexley has made significant improvements to its fostering resources since 1990. The Council is a leader in recruiting foster carers, professional support for foster carers and NVQ training, supporting children leaving care, and independent advocacy and involvement of children and young people.

Beacon Council 2000-2001, Dealing with Waste

2000-2001
Dealing with Waste

Bexley recycled 25% of the Borough's waste and increased waste incineration to 56% in 1999/2000. This reduced waste going to landfill to just 19%. Home composting is also widely promoted. Bexley has a strong commitment to sustainable development, community involvement, and business waste minimisation. Bexley has been a Collection and Disposal Authority since 1986.
