Waste and Recycling

Bexley has been one of the highest recyclers in London for many years.
This success is underpinned by its comprehensive urban cutting-edge recycling
services, the Council's corporate processes that drive performance, and use of
imaginative ways to ensure that all sections of the community are actively engaged
in recycling. |

2004-2005
Crime and Disorder Partnerships |
|
Bexley was one of only nine Councils chosen to be awarded Beacon status
for its success in cutting anti-social behaviour and crime. As well as gaining
the award Bexley Community Safety Partnership received a special mention for its
partnership working, particularly with the local community.

Improving Urban Green Spaces |
|
The DTLR said "Bexley display a diverse range of green spaces, and
possess a clear vision and simple strategy to improve them. Schemes like Local
Agenda 21 and "Environment Challenge" for school children demonstrate
a proactive approach to partnerships with the public, private and voluntary sectors". |

2002-2003
Fostering Business Growth |
|
The Advisory Panel reported that Bexley demonstrated a sound approach to
Fostering Business Growth, and the Economic Development Strategy. The Council
makes use of consultation, its website and local press; has good links and partnerships
with other agencies; and has a significant asset in the Belvedere Business Centre,
which provides support for new businesses. |

2001-2002
Foster Care |
|
Whilst maintaining a child care policy of retaining children wherever possible
within their families, Bexley has made significant improvements to its fostering
resources since 1990. The Council is a leader in recruiting foster carers, professional
support for foster carers and NVQ training, supporting children leaving care,
and independent advocacy and involvement of children and young people. |

2000-2001
Dealing with Waste |
|
Bexley recycled 25% of the Borough's waste and increased waste incineration
to 56% in 1999/2000. This reduced waste going to landfill to just 19%. Home composting
is also widely promoted. Bexley has a strong commitment to sustainable development,
community involvement, and business waste minimisation. Bexley has been a Collection
and Disposal Authority since 1986. |
