Our Aims and Objectives
The Council seeks to provide local services, and act as a leader and facilitator to fulfil the goals set out in our priorities. How we go about delivering on these priorities is set out in our Corporate Plan. This is the Council’s main strategic plan.
Our Sustainable Community Strategy puts forward our aspirations for the community and for its future. It has been developed by the local strategic partnership - the Partnership for Bexley. The vision of Bexley it sets out has been agreed with local people and our partners. It sets the context for our planning processes, and that of our partners in the long term.
Our aim of building a strong, sustainable and cohesive community will be achieved through:
Building safer and stronger communities
- Reducing anti-social behaviour on our streets, including drug- and alcohol-related youth disorder and graffiti;
- Reducing crime, including violent crime, ensuring local people feel safer and have less fear of crime;
- Empowering local people by encouraging and supporting volunteer work and involving residents in decisions that affect their local area; and
- Encouraging and supporting all local people, including those of different backgrounds, to work and live together.
Developing healthier communities for adults
- Promoting choice and independent living in the community through increased levels of customer access, control and equity. This includes easy access to high quality GP and hospital care;
- Ensuring better quality care for vulnerable adults by providing intermediate and re-ablement services, and effective safeguarding. This includes ensuring that vulnerable adults and older people are able to maintain independent living wherever possible; and
- Ensuring that people enjoy healthier and longer lives by developing improvements in health and well-being, and public service integration. This includes developing services to tackle risk factors for ill-health, and a community where there are cultural and leisure opportunities to improve health and allow local people to feel welcomed and included.
Promoting economic development and the environment
- Delivering a range of housing options to suit different household incomes and sizes, with well-designed public buildings and spaces;
- Reducing the Borough’s carbon footprint through a range of measures including a reduction in car usage and improved public transport;
- Developing a strong and sustainable local economy, through high quality education and training, and creation of job opportunities; and
- Maintaining a high quality environment, ensuring Bexley is a clean and attractive Borough that promotes the feeling of safety among its residents.
Developing services for children and young people
- Enhancing the life chances of children and young people by all partners focusing on early intervention to address difficulties and find solutions, and to ensure that all children and young people are safeguarded;
- Improving educational standards and outcomes for all children and young people in our schools and narrow the gap for vulnerable groups;
- Improving levels of school attendance and reducing exclusions, encouraging all children and young people to stay in learning and move into employment, training or further education at sixteen; and
- Implementing initiatives and developing youth provision to ensure that children and young people lead healthy lives, engage in a range of positive activities, and have emotional well-being.
