Guide to Major Emergencies for Homes and Businesses in Bexley

What is a Major Emergency?

It is an incident of a scale that requires special measures to be implemented to deal with it. Examples include:

  • Serious incidents affecting our transport infrastructure, (rail and aircraft crashes);
  • Extreme weather, (damaging storms, heavy snow, heat wave, flooding);
  • Large industrial accidents (fuel and other hazardous chemical spillages or fires);
  • Terrorist incidents

Preparing for major emergencies in Bexley

The best preparation for these events are those that you do for yourself such as preparing an emergency kit that includes:

  • Copies of your home insurance documents (make sure that you are adequately insured)
  • A torch with spare batteries( Make sure the batteries are not past their shelf life date)
  • A windup or battery radio;
  • Warm, waterproof clothing and blankets;
  • A first aid kit and prescription medicine;
  • Bottled water and non perishable food;
  • Baby food and care items

At the time of an emergency:

  • If the danger is outside – Go In, Stay In, Tune in. Close all windows and doors and stay inside until you are told the emergency is over.
  • If the danger is inside – Go Out, Stay Out, Call the Emergency Services Out. Don’t go back into the building. If someone is missing, tell the emergency services when they arrive.
