Coping with Emergencies

Flooding

Some parts of Bexley lie within the flood risk areas of our three major rivers, the Thames, the Cray and the Shuttle.

You can check whether your home or business is in such an area by contacting the Environment Agency Floodline on 0845 988 1188, or visiting their Website, External Linkwww.environment-agency.gov.uk

Bexley Flood Risk Areas

Bexley Flood Risk Areas

If your property is in a flood risk area it is highly recommended that you sign up to their free telephone flood warning service ‘Floodline’.

Remember the best way to prepare for a flood is to prepare now.

Whether you are a resident or run a business in Bexley, the Environment Agency can provide further detailed advice but you can do:

  • Check your insurance cover;
  • Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies;
  • Prepare an emergency kit of essential items as detailed above/on page;
  • Know who to contact and how;
  • Think about what you can move now;
  • Think about what you would want to move to safety during a flood;

Advice for dealing with flooding before, during and after from the Environment Agency.

Severe Storm

Tie down loose items outside that cannot be brought in. Stay indoors, preferably downstairs and keep pets in. Clear windowsills and close curtains to protect from fling glass. If gas, electricity or water is cut off, tell the relevant service. As soon as safe rope off or protect damaged areas to prevent injury.

Chemical Accidents, toxic fumes and smoke

Stay indoors, shut all doors and windows and tune into your radio. Switch off air conditioning or fans. If you are outside ,go to the nearest public building or shop. Listen to loudspeaker and radio announcements and be ready to move if the are is evacuated.

Emergency Evacuation

If the Police ask you to leave your home, please don't argue. Their responsibility is your safety and they would not ask you to leave if it was not vital. They will probably ask you to go to a reception centre. If you decide to go anywhere else, for example to relatives, let someone know, so you can be accounted for.

If you have elderly or disabled neighbours, check that they are alright or inform the Emergency Services that they require assistance. If there is time, take along any medicines, warm clothes, any special foods, personal documents, immediate valuables and baskets and leads for pets.

Before you leave, make sure fires are out, switch off gas and electricity and lock up.

Radio and TV - warning the public

In major emergency situations, it may be necessary to issue warnings and advice to the public. Such messages would normally be broadcast on relevant radio and TV channels.

Remember to cater for power cuts - you should have a battery-operated radio and know how to tune in to your local stations.
