Gender Equality Scheme
The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 was amended by the Equality Act 2006 and
now places a general duty on all public authorities, when carrying out their
functions, to have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment; and
- Promote equality of opportunity between men and women
The duty not only applies to new services or functions, but also to existing
decisions, and it is for this reason that all services are required to carry
out gender equality impact assessment over the coming years. The general duty
came into force on 6 April 2007.
London Borough of Bexley welcomes the gender equality duty and has prepared its first
gender equality scheme in consultation with employees, members of the public
and local trade union.
The scheme sets out what action, over the next three years, the Council intends
to take to meet its statutory duties under the Act. As you will see by going
through the action plan, London Borough of Bexley knows that promoting equality is more
than meeting statutory requirements, we are also focusing on change, and addressing
identified barriers to gender equality.
Please take time to read through the scheme and provide us with any comments
you may have.
