2004 Workforce Survey – Initial results

In order to comply with the requirement of the Race Relations Act 2000, the Council is required to publish detailed workforce composition in terms of their ethnicity, gender and disability along with a range of other employment related information such as training, promotions etc. The aim of the workforce survey was to ensure that the Council obtains information from all employees regarding ethnicity, gender and disability, along with asking them to check the accuracy of other personal information the Council holds.

The result of the workforce survey conducted recently can be viewed here, PDF Document(132KB, PDF file)

These results represent ethnicity data from 85% of our workforce, which is a significant increase on the Council’s previous baseline figure of 60% from the survey in 2000. Of the 85%, White employees make up 93.8%, while Black & Minority group employees 6.2%. The borough’s population according to the 2001 Census consists of 91.4% White and 8.6% Black & Minority Ethnic groups.

The results show that the Council is making positive progress to increase the diversity of its staff. This positive work should continue to ensure that the Council workforce reflects the community that we serve.

The Council would like to secure an even better return rate and various avenues are proposed to obtain the outstanding 15% ethnicity data. HR staff would be going out in January to chase up and obtain the outstanding information. It is hoped that this would help to secure information on close to 100% of the workforce.
