The Mayor's Charity Appeal

Alzheimer’s Disease Society

The Mayoress and I will work throughout our year of office to raise much-needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Disease Society, Bexley Branch. The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading care and research charity for people with all forms of dementia and their carers. The Bexley Branch of the society has provided services in the Borough for over 20 years.

The term ‘dementia’ is used to describe symptoms that occur when the brain is damaged by specific diseases. These diseases include Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. This terrible condition causes short-term memory loss and the ability to think, reason and communicate. There may be changes in behaviour and personality. As the illness progresses, symptoms become more severe and people need support with every aspect of daily living.

Dementia not only affects the person who has it, but everyone who is concerned about that person. Carers often feel alone and isolated. The branch respects the amount of work, energy and love that the family carer gives in caring for someone with dementia.

They provide a help-line for family carers; Groups where carers and cared-for are encouraged to participate in a sociable and enjoyable experience; Carers Support Groups, and Carers Breaks. They also provide a group for younger people with early onset dementia. The Branch is currently supporting more than 90 people in the Borough on a weekly basis.

The vital work of Bexley Branch is dependent on funding from Social Services and the Care Trust, together with fundraising activities and the generosity of those who make donations and sponsor events.

We would be delighted if you were able to support one of our fundraising events during the coming months. For further information about the appeal, or the fundraising events, please contact the Mayor’s office on 020 8294 6102/6150 or 6153.
