Waste and recycling - houses

Around 78,000 houses, maisonettes, houses converted into flats and some smaller blocks of flats are provided with kerbside waste and recycling collections.

Waste and recycling collections for houses

There are separate arrangements for the occupants of blocks of  flats and flats above shops.

What can you recycle?

Each household has been provided with the following wheelie bins and recycling boxes*:

Please select the links above for more information on what can and can't go in each of the bins and boxes. If any of your bins and boxes are damaged or missing, please use the online form to order replacements.

The brown bin and all of the recycling boxes are emptied every week, the green bin (for non-recyclable waste) is emptied every other week. If you're unsure of your collection day or schedule you can check these online

* Some converted houses or smaller blocks of flats may have communal bins for recycling rather than individual boxes.

What to do on your collection day?

Please leave your waste and recycling containers out for collection by 6.45am on your collection day.

Your bins and boxes need to be left at the front edge of your property (within 1 metre of your property boundary) for collection.

If you do not have enough space at the front of your property your bins and boxes may be left on the pavement for collection as long as they don't cause an obstruction. They must be taken in again as soon as they are emptied and must not be left on the pavement at any other time.

If you have a comment, question or complaint about this service the FAQ page may provide some help, if not please contact us.

Assisted collections

If you are unable to move your bins and boxes to the front edge of your property due to ill health or disability you may be eligible for an assisted collection. Residents who are subject to assisted collections will have their waste and recycling collected from an agreed alternative location on their property. Please use the online form to request an assisted collection.

Missed collections

If your bin or box has not been emptied on your collection day please report a missed collection using the online form and our contractor will return to collect your waste by the end of the next business day.

Before you make a report please ensure that:

  • Your bin or box was at the edge of your property by 6.45am
  • You have put your waste out on the correct collection day
  • Your bin has not been issued with a red tag
  • The correct materials are in your bin or box

You will not be able to report a missed collection if any of the above are incorrect. In this case please wait for your next collection or take your waste or recycling to either of the reuse and recycling centres or mini-recycling sites.

If you have ongoing problems with regularly missed collections please contact us using the online form and one of the Waste and Recycling Advisors will be able investigate.
