Placing out of A Boards on the Public Highway
If you wish to place A boards on the public highway you will require a licence from the Council.
Licence summary
Applications must be made in writing (including by electronic means).
You will need to provide specific information, including details of the area you wish to use to place out A Boards. All required information is set out in the application under related downloads.
You must comply with any conditions attached to a licence which can also be found under related downloads.
Eligibility Criteria
You must be over 17 years of age to hold a licence.
Applicants need to have:
- Third Party Insurance of minimum £5,000,000
- The area of public highway where the A board/s are to be placed must be sufficient to allow at least 1.3m of unobstructed footway.
Normally applicants will be restricted to one A Board. However, permission may be granted for up to 3 A boards, subject to certain criteria

Application Evaluation Process
- Applicants should read the conditions in the link on the right hand panel before completing an application
- Applications should be submitted with the appropriate fee. Fees are charged for each A Board
- Applications will be assessed for eligibility upon receipt and an Officer will contact the applicant within 5 working days to arrange to meet on site where necessary
- Once granted, the licence will be sent by post to the applicant. Processing of a licence will usually take up to 5 working days
- Licences are valid for either 6 months or 1 year
Fees - A boards are charged at £1 per board per week. £26 for six months or £50 for a year.

Will Tacit Consent Apply?
No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from the local authority within a reasonable period, please contact Contact Centre.
