Pass on unused clothes and textiles
18 June 2012
The textiles doorstep collection service that has been available since March to 12,000 households in the Welling, Bexleyheath and Barnehurst areas, has already diverted more than 1.1 tonnes of textiles from being thrown away.
The trial finishes at the end of July, so there are still a few weeks to pass on any unwanted clothes through the scheme.
The Council has been working in partnership with the clothing charity TRAID to provide a trial five month textiles doorstep collection service. The aim is to collect these materials and put them to good use, either for re-use via the charity shop or for recycling.
If the service is successful, the Council and TRAID hope to roll it across out across the borough in the future.
To check if your road is part of the scheme please use the link on the right hand side or call the Council's Contact Centre 020 8303 7777. Please note that flats are not included at this stage of the trial.
Some of the clean and dry textiles that can be collected are:
* Coats and jackets
* Pairs of shoes
* Trousers and jeans
* Sweatshirts, jumpers and T-shirts
* Shirts and blouses
* Dresses and skirts
* Baby and children's clothing
* Accessories including gloves, belts and scarves
* Textiles including cushions, towels and linen
Households that are not in the trial area can still participate in recycling and re-using their unwanted textiles by taking items to their local charity shop or their nearest recycling bank. To find your closest textile recycling bank or for more information on the collection trial please visit www.bexley.gov.uk/recycling or call customer services on 020 8303 7777.
