Safeguarding adults - Alerters guide

Do you work with vulnerable adults? It is your duty to help safeguard them from abuse. All vulnerable adults have a right to be safeguarded and the right to equality of treatment, opportunity and inclusion.

The alerters' guide helps you to:

  • identify who is a vulnerable adult 
  • identify how a person may be vulnerable 
  • identify abuse and the different types of abuse 
  • be alert to indicators of abuse 
  • make a referral to report abuse 
  • make a referral in office hours 
  • make a referral to the out-of-hours emergency duty team 
  • contact the Police 
  • contact the Care Quality Commission (CQC) 

The alerters' guide also sets out your responsibilities to:

  • alert your line manager and others to an abusive situation 
  • deal with any immediate needs including medical treatment 
  • listen to the abused person, preserve evidence and make a record 

and sets out line manager responsibilities concerning:

  • checking on immediate needs including medical treatment 
  • clarifying essential facts with staff member 
  • making a record 
  • contacting Social Services 
  • contact with the client's service manager and (where appropriate) relatives 
  • preserving evidence 

Safeguarding adults multi agency procedures

The Safeguarding Adults Multi Agency Procedures sets a standard for best practice when working with vulnerable adults. Good practice in safeguarding adults is about how agencies work together in partnership to ensure vulnerable adults are made safe. All employees and agencies are expected to comply with these procedures.
