The service is staffed by specialist teachers whose aims are: to meet the educational and pastoral needs of all children with English as an Additional language by raising ethnic minority achievement; developing language competence; supporting newly arrived children and developing staff awareness of these issues.

What it provides

Direct language teaching; liaison with staff and parents; advice and training for teachers; access to interpreting and translation; refugee support; liaison with relevant agencies.

Who for?

Teaching and support for ethnic minority and refugee children - support and training for school staff in Bexley.

How?

The Head of Service leads fifteen teachers who speak a range of languages and are qualified to teach English as an additional language. Administrative support is provided. Ethnic minority achievement targets are set and reviewed. Referrals are taken from the admissions department, schools and social services. Individual pupil support is allocated according to language need and GCSE demands.
