27 January 2010 - The future of Slade Green schools

The London Borough of Bexley is strengthening its partnership with Haberdashers' Aske's Federation with new proposals for two of the borough's schools.

Slade Green Infant and Junior Schools are the subject of a joint expression of interest from the Council and Haberdashers' Aske's Federation that has been submitted to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) that could see the schools become part of the new Haberdashers' Aske's Crayford Academy.

"We believe that an extension of the Haberdashers' Aske's Federation will be another positive move for education in our Borough" said Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle. "The primary phase of the new Academy got off to a flying start when it opened in September with parents and children all extremely pleased about their new school.

By continuing to work together with Haberdashers' Aske's and making the Slade Green schools an integral part of an already successful Federation we feel that we would be able to best support them in the challenges that they face. Full consultation with all parents and carers will take place in due course and we will ensure that they are kept informed of the proposal's progress throughout."

Dr Elizabeth Sidwell CBE, CEO of the Haberdashers' Aske's Federation said; "I am delighted at the prospect of extending our partnership with Bexley. Haberdashers' Aske's Crayford Academy has been enthusiastically welcomed by its local community and the Haberdashers' Aske's Federation is committed to providing the best education possible for the young people of the area. Slade Green is already established as an important feeder school for the academy and we look forward to consulting on this exciting proposal to bring the two schools fully into the Federation."

Should the schools become part of the new Academy, children who complete Year 6 will have the opportunity to automatically feed into the secondary section in Crayford.

The proposal to bring the schools into the Federation is part of the borough's wider Primary School Strategy which has already seen four of the borough's oldest schools rebuilt or refurbished and proposals approved to develop improvements to a further two schools.

If the Secretary of State approves the Expression of Interest, the proposal will be subject to a full public consultation process conducted by the Council that will take place later in the year, including meetings to be held at both schools.
