ParkingApril 2010 A fresh approach to parking in Bexley
A new era will begin for parking in the London Borough of Bexley from 1 April, with the appointment of NSL as the new parking enforcement contractor. They won the five year civil parking enforcement contract with the Council, following a competitive cost quality tendering process. Cllr Craske Cabinet Member for Transport said: "This new contract marks the beginning of a fresh approach to parking in the borough. We have tied in a range of improvements that will provide better value for money and gives us more flexibility to target our resources. "All parking customer services and challenges of Penalty Charge Notices will be dealt with 'in house' by Council staff, so there will be a clear separation between the enforcement and appeal processes." Tim Cowen, Director of Communications at NSL commented: "We always try to deliver a first class public service. On street parking management is all about customer service – it is our job to encourage drivers to park responsibly and to help improve access to kerb space for drivers, and improve road safety and reduce congestion for all road users. We also believe Civil Enforcement Officers should be ambassadors for their borough, so we hope that any visitors to Bexley who need directions will be ably assisted by our team working on the streets." The new contract is part of a package of value for money and customer service measures being undertaken by the Council through the Bexley First programme. Parking Bexley's busy streets have been getting busier and the Council is having to make decisions on where people can and cannot park while balancing the interests of residents, visitors, businesses and shoppers. We maintain a list of council-operated car parks, including current charges, security facilities, and links to maps. We also maintain a list of on-street pay and display facilities throughout the borough, featuring locations and charges of the facilities. The Council is responsible for enforcing parking restrictions and as from the 1st April 2010 employs NSL Limited to enforce them. The Council is currently responsible for enforcement of:
Bexley's parking regulations have been implemented with two main aims in mind - to keep traffic flowing freely and to make the roads as safe as possible. Enforcement is undertaken to achieve these aims by deterring illegal parking. Obstruction and enforcing Red Routes (A2 and A20) however, remain the responsibility of the police. The Police can also enforce pedestrian crossings and the zig zag markings approaching them. If enforced by the Police this could lead to your driving licence being endorsed.
