Local Events
Bexley's Local Studies and Archive Centre offers a wide range of events which take place throughout the year. During the winter there are historical talks at Local Studies and at Hall Place on a range of local subjects and in the summer there are walks conducted by local historians around local areas.

of Westminster will be giving
an illustrated talk on Sir Hiram
Maxim, the self styled chronic
inventor famous for his
machine gun and a not so
successful flying machine.

Event: Mural Painting Workshop – A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (Free)
Venue: Crayford Library
A workshop for kids and adults to work with artist Jonathan Boast to create a mural reflecting Crayford’s History to be displayed in the new Crayford Library.

Event: Sub Rosa Theatre Company present - A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (£3.00)
Venue: Hall Place
On the 90th anniversary of Alcock and Brown’s flight across the Atlantic in A Vickers Vimy, the Sub Rosa theatre company presents an original drama looking at Crayford’s contribution to the pioneering years of flight.

Join Oliver Wooller on a
walk around the ancient
village of Old Bexley,
taking in some of it’s
places of historical
interest including the
Styleman Almshouses,
Saint Mary’s Church and
the old Manor House.

Event: Animation Workshop – A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (Free)
Venue: Crayford Library
A fantastic opportunity for kids and adults to work with animator Tom Hillenbrand to help create an animation on Crayford’s links with the early history of flight.

Event: Evacuee reminiscence afternoon
Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
An opportunity to get
together to reminisce
about the events of
September 1939, when
Britain went to war and
the lives of children and
adults were changed
forever. This event
commemorates the 70th
anniversary of the
evacuation.

Event: Family history day

North West Kent Family History Society will be providing
advice and assistance for those researching their family
history. These free drop in sessions will give you the
boost you need to discover your ancestors.
Thursday 22 October, 7.15pm (£4.00)
Event: Talk by Lee Ault. "All the rage"
Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
Lee Ault will be telling the story of
ladies costumes in the 1920’s,
reflecting a new found freedom that
some women found by working in
the first world war, filling many male
occupations. The talk will be
illustrated with clothes and
accessories of the period.

Event: Talk by Oliver Wooller. "Cannons, Courtiers and Carpenters"
Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
Oliver Wooller will present an illustrated
account of Bexley in the reign of
Henry VIII, including the
dissolution of Lesnes Abbey,
the building of Hall Place
and the foundation
of the Royal
Dockyards at
Erith. 2009
marks the
500th anniversary of Henry
VIII’s accession to the throne.

Event: Talk by Denise Baldwin and Katherine Harding. "A little bit of chanting – celebrating our school days"

With verse and rhyme,
Denise Baldwin and

on the Victorian era
and the beginning of
state provision of
education for all.
