Local Studies and Archive Centre

Local Events

Bexley's Local Studies and Archive Centre offers a wide range of events which take place throughout the year. During the winter there are historical talks at Local Studies and at Hall Place on a range of local subjects and in the summer there are walks conducted by local historians around local areas.

Tickets for events must be purchased in advance and can be obtained from Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre, Central Library, Townley Road, Bexleyheath, DA6 7HJ or telephone 020 8836 7369.

Talk by Peter Daniel. Hiram MaximThursday 14 May, 7.15pm
Event: Talk by Peter Daniel. Hiram Maxim (£3.50)
Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
Peter Daniel, Archives Education Officer for the City of Westminster will be giving an illustrated talk on Sir Hiram Maxim, the self styled chronic inventor famous for his machine gun and a not so successful flying machine.



Women workers in East and South East LondonThursday 4 June, 7pm - 8pm

Photographs and extracts from interviews with women factory workers from 1950 to present day.

Venue: Crayford Library
A workshop for kids and adults to work with artist Jonathan Boast to create a mural reflecting Crayford’s History to be displayed in the new Crayford Library.

Event: Sub Rosa Theatre Company present - A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (£3.00)

On the 90th anniversary of Alcock and Brown’s flight across the Atlantic in A Vickers Vimy, the Sub Rosa theatre company presents an original drama looking at Crayford’s contribution to the pioneering years of flight.

Event: Guided walk of Old Bexley (£3.50)

Venue: Meeting point specified on ticket
Join Oliver Wooller on a walk around the ancient village of Old Bexley, taking in some of it’s places of historical interest including the Styleman Almshouses, Saint Mary’s Church and the old Manor House.


Animation Workshop – A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (Free)Saturday 20 June, 10am - 4pm
Event: Animation Workshop – A Magnificent Town and Its Flying Machines (Free)

Venue: Crayford Library
A fantastic opportunity for kids and adults to work with animator Tom Hillenbrand to help create an animation on Crayford’s links with the early history of flight.

Guided walk of Northumberland HeathWednesday 22 July, 7.15pm
Event: Guided walk of Northumberland Heath (£3.50)

Venue: Meeting point specified on ticket.
Oliver Wooller leads a ramble around Northumberland Heath, taking in the old Brook Street Cemetery, the Duke Public House and St. Paul’s Church.


Evacuee reminiscence afternoonThursday 3 September, 3 - 5pm Free
Event: Evacuee reminiscence afternoon

Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
An opportunity to get together to reminisce about the events of September 1939, when Britain went to war and the lives of children and adults were changed forever. This event commemorates the 70th anniversary of the evacuation.



Family History DaySaturday 19 September, 10 am - 4 pm Free
Event: Family history day

Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath North West Kent Family History Society will be providing advice and assistance for those researching their family history. These free drop in sessions will give you the boost you need to discover your ancestors.



Talk by Lee Ault. "All the rage"Thursday 22 October, 7.15pm (£4.00)
Event: Talk by Lee Ault. "All the rage"

Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
Lee Ault will be telling the story of ladies costumes in the 1920’s, reflecting a new found freedom that some women found by working in the first world war, filling many male occupations. The talk will be illustrated with clothes and accessories of the period.

"Cannons, Courtiers and Carpenters"
Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
Oliver Wooller will present an illustrated account of Bexley in the reign of Henry VIII, including the dissolution of Lesnes Abbey, the building of Hall Place and the foundation of the Royal Dockyards at Erith. 2009 marks the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne.

Event: Talk by Denise Baldwin and Katherine Harding. "A little bit of chanting – celebrating our school days"

Venue: Local Studies and Archive Centre, Bexleyheath
With verse and rhyme, Denise Baldwin and Katherine Harding will glimpse into the history of education with particular focus on the Victorian era and the beginning of state provision of education for all.
