Local Studies and Archive Centre

Research Service

Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre offers a research service in response to telephone, email or postal enquires. Searches can be made of the full range of sources held by the Centre: manuscripts, photographs, microform and books.

How much will it cost?

Our basic enquires service is free for information about what records we hold, what services we supply and simple research enquiries taking no longer than 20 minutes. However, if you cannot visit Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre in person and you have a detailed research request concerning either family or local history (in the area that since 1965 has comprised of the London Borough of Bexley), then why not take advantage of Bexley Local Studies Research Service.

The charge is £22 per hour, with a maximum of two hour's research.

How do I pay?

Payment should be made in advance and can be made by the following methods:

  • Cheque in sterling
  • Postal Order in sterling
  • An international Money Order payable in sterling

All cheques should be made payable to London Borough of Bexley . We do not currently accept payment by credit or charge cards over the Internet.

How do I request a search?

Simply write or email us at Emailarchives@bexley.gov.uk, with the details of your enquiry, marking your letter/email Research Service. Also you can use our Download PDF documentResearch Request Form, (38KB, PDF document)

If necessary we will contact your to discuss your enquiry and we will advise you on how long the search will take.

In order to carry out a search we need to know:

  • The information you are looking for - for example you may be trying to find the baptism of John Smith in Bexley in 1800.
  • Any relevant information you already know - for example you may know that John's father was known as Thomas or Tom.
  • Any relevant sources that you have consulted - for example you may have already conducted a search of the International Genealogical Index.

Whatever you request, please be concise and specific.

How long will it take?

Customers will be provided with a research report within four weeks of receipt.

How will the search be reported to me?

We will respond by letter. The report will include details of any information discovered, a list of sources consulted and suggestions for further avenues of research.

We do not guarantee that our research will reveal the information you require. Even if no positive results are obtained we will try to advise you of other possible avenues to pursue.
