Here's to a Smarter Crayford
Crayford is looking a good deal smarter after a rejuvenating makeover has given the town a fresh new appearance.
Local ward councillors, and Council officers hailed the new smarter Crayford when they met recently to view the completed works at Crayford Waterside and at the corner of Maxim Road and Roman Way. This part of the project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.
Cllr Howard Marriner, one of the Crayford councillors, says: "The aim of the scheme is to provide a smart new open space at Waterside, which sets the 'street scene' at Crayford, for future regeneration works in the area. Old and unused planters have been removed and new trees, lighting columns, benches, bins and bollards have been installed.
"The area will be an ideal place to host attractions such as the annual Crayford Fun Day, children's events, specialist market stalls and street entertainment."
Cllr John Waters, Bexley Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, says: "The improvement works to Crayford Waterside have been completed successfully and have made a big difference to the area. This will be just one of many improvements to Crayford Town Centre in the coming months."
The shops at Waterside are already benefiting from the improvements as they are now more visible from Crayford High Street. Maxim Road has been cleared and tidied, opening up the River Cray. New plants and street furniture have also been installed.
The two sites are the first step in the wider regeneration of Crayford and will act as a high quality benchmark against which all future developments can be based. The Council is still talking to the land owners about the proposed memorial garden.
The improvement works at Crayford Waterside and Maxim Road were funded jointly by Bexley Council, the Thames Gateway London Partnership Action for Excellence Programme and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
