Bexley's Recycling Campaign Reaches New Heights
Bexley Council is continuing its softly-softly approach to boost its recycling rate. The Council is in its third year of an effective door knocking campaign that has helped to drive the borough's recycling rate to nearly 40% using encouragement and gentle persuasion.
The next stage of the campaign is directed at residents of flats who receive a slightly different recycling service from houses. The Council has recently made recycling even easier for residents of flats and it's time to spread the word.
Advisers will be calling on flats across the borough from the beginning of June, providing help and general recycling advice. They will also encourage feedback on recycling in Bexley and how residents feel the borough's recycling services could be improved.
The advisers will also be visiting Erith Riverside and Morrisons Supermarket in Erith on Saturday, 2 June 2007 talking to residents about recycling issues.
Cllr Gareth Bacon, Bexley Cabinet Member for the Environment, says: "Our tremendous recycling results have been made possible through the continued contribution from our residents."
"Many local people, businesses and schools are already making a great difference to their community by recycling their refuse. I hope that by providing this kind of expert guidance and encouragement to even more Bexley residents we can surpass our already excellent recycling record."
The campaign uses funding from WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Plan) and is conducted on behalf of the Council by Waste Watch. Advisers have already carried out a pre-campaign survey to identify current recycling habits.
As well as looking at recycling patterns in Bexley, the advisers will be able to give specific help on:
- Recycling from flats and communal buildings
- Which materials can be collected in the separate bins
- How to recycle kitchen waste using the brown bins
- The function of 'mini-bring' sites
- The work of the reuse and recycling centres at Thames Road and Maidstone Road
The recycling advisers - who are only able to discuss recycling issues - will carry identification and will be in Waste Watch uniform. Anyone who has a problem identifying the callers can ring 020 8303 7777 and choose option 1.
