Online Petition Launched as Bexley Council Fights to Restore Tunnel's Tidal Flow
Local residents who oppose the recent decision by Transport for London to
end the rush hour tidal flow system at the Blackwall Tunnel are being offered
the chance to sign an online petition calling for the decision to be reversed.
The petition has been launched by Bexley Council and is available at www.petitionthem.com
It reads: "We, the undersigned, call on Transport for London to re-instate
the tidal flow at the Blackwall Tunnel with immediate effect."
The tidal flow system allowed traffic travelling north below the Thames during
the morning rush hour to use three of the tunnel's four lanes. It operated
for 29 years, but TfL decided to scrap it on 20 April at short notice and with
no consultation.
"There is widespread concern about the effects of the change on rush
hour traffic," said Cllr
Peter Craske, Bexley Council's Cabinet member
for Transport. "We are pressing TfL to provide the full justification
for their decision and we have organised the petition to give local people
the chance to give their views."
Cllr Ian Clement, the Leader of Bexley Council added: "Signing the online
petition only takes a couple of minutes, but it will help us make the case
for the restoration of the tidal flow system. People who do not have access
to the internet at home or at work can go online free at any Bexley library."
Bexley Councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning TfL's decision
at the full Council meeting on 25 April.
