New Guide to Short Walks on the Green Chain

Whether walking for health or recreation, stepping out on the Green Chain is fun when there is so much nature to see and you can watch the seasons unfold!

Some groups, however, felt that the Green Chain - a network of over 300 open spaces in south-east London - did not cater enough for those with limited mobility, or for people who were getting back into health. To address these concerns, the Green Chain - a project funded by the partner local authorities - teamed up with the local Primary Care Trusts to develop a pocket-sized circular walks pack of shorter walks for all abilities.

Over 100 people came to the recent launch event on the Green Chain on one of the featured walks.

Cllr Gareth Bacon, Bexley Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, is full of praise for the new initiative: "The new walks pack is designed for those who may not have considered taking up walking before. All 10 walks in the pack are under two miles - some are much shorter - and are easy to follow. It's a taster really of what the wider Green Chain has to offer. Walking is fun, and as well as improving your health you get to see some of London's more hidden treasures."

Bexley Care Trust's healthy walks co-ordinator Lynda Stevens adds: "All the ten circular walks are great, but one of my personal favourites is the one on Lesnes Abbey heath. It's a bit tucked away, but the maps in the pack are really helpful and give you all the travel directions you need."
