Unity within Diversity conference success

Bexley Council for Racial Equality recently held a groundbreaking conference for the young people of Bexley.

The 'Unity within Diversity' conference invited young people to take part in a range of workshops designed to get them talking about the issue of racism in the borough. The workshop themes included, 'Gang Culture', 'Combating Racism in an Educational Setting' and 'Anti-Social Behaviour'. Find out more about the conference.

28 June - When Stop Means Stop

The highly visible, 40-strong, Bexley School Crossing Patrol Team will be out in force in Bexleyheath Broadway on Friday 6 July, giving a renewed boost to a year-long, London-wide 'Stop Means Stop' Campaign.

28 June - A Treasure Chest of Fun at Belvedere Splash Park

Don't be surprised to see young pirates and fairies running around Belvedere Splash Park next month in search of buried treasure! The park is hosting a special treasure hunt on the day the Tour de France comes through the borough (8 July).

27 June - Alcohol Removed from Shelves of a Welling Shop

Fears about the management of JJ Newsagents, 221 Bellegrove Road, Welling, led to the shop being targeted by Bexley Council and police in a recent joint working initiative aimed at tackling underage sales of alcohol.

27 June - Check it's a Charity

A warning that people should check before simply assuming that organisations collecting old clothes are charities was issued this week by Bexley Trading Standards.

27 June - Council Selects New Provider for Support Services

Bexley Council has selected Kent Community Housing Trust (KCHT) to provide support services to residents in some of the borough's sheltered housing schemes.

27 June - Fun on The Water at Danson

This year's activities are bigger and better than ever at Danson Park Watersports Centre. There are new courses available for children and adults and once again the programme has been expanded for the season.

26 June - Helping Hand for Carers

Bexley's Mayor, Cllr Nigel Betts, was delighted to have the tables turned on him on Monday, 11 June, when, with the Mayoress, Mrs Hilary Betts, he visited Pier Road Centre in Erith. to celebrate national Carers Week. The Mayor, who usually has his tea poured for him when he makes an official visit to various events, helped hand out the cuppas to guests at a special buffet lunch organised by Bexley's Carers Services.

26 June - Thames Road Depot Closed on 8 July

Bexley Council's Re-Use and Recycling Centre at Thames Road, Crayford will be closed on Sunday 8 July. The depot is on the route that Tour de France cyclists will take when they come racing through the borough.

26 June - Mayor and Mayoress Protecting their Eyes on Shades Day 2007

The Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Nigel Betts and his Mayoress wife Hilary have been learning more about eye health as they joined thousands of young people and adults across the country to support the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's Shades Day, which is on Friday 29 June 2007.

26 June - Picnic in The Park with 20 Childminders

Childminders and parents picnicked at Belvedere Splash Park on Wednesday, 20 June, celebrating National Childminding Week (16-23 June).

26 June - Sports Challenge for Everyone

Specialist sports, such as Boccia, a version of bowls for people with mobility problems, and New Age Kurling, like Scottish curling but without the ice, will be among the events when Erith Leisure Centre plays host to a Charity Sports Day Challenge, organised by the Disabled Tenants and Residents Association (DATRA) on Saturday 21 July.

25 June - Tour De France Fun Comes To Bexley

Bexley Council, local businesses and community groups have organised a list of fun events to celebrate the arrival of the Tour de France on 8 July.

22 June - Pupils See The Light During Maths Week

Pupils at a Bexleyheath school saw the light during their recent Maths Week - with a little help from one of Bexley Council's officers.

22 June - Bexley's Music Students Play On

Lessons resumed this week at the former home of the Bexley Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Sidcup, as the Council delivered on its promise to help students facing exams next month.

21 June - Bexley Refugee Week Event

The problems facing the world's refugees were brought home to Bexley schoolchildren on Wednesday 20 June by a series of special events staged at Hall Place, Bourne Road.

21 June - Community Acts Together to Clean Up Blackfen

Residents, police and Bexley councillors took part in a planned operation to clear Blackfen's rubbish and litter on Saturday, 16 June, to put pride back into the area as part of London's Capital Clean-up Campaign.

20 June - Hundreds Go Ride at Danson Park

Hundreds of cycling enthusiasts of all ages braved the weather this weekend (16 June) to take part in a Family Fun Ride in Danson Park, organised by Bexley Council and local cycling club Go Ride Bexley.

19 June - Bid to help Bexley's Sporting Talent

Talented athletes are to get all the help that Bexley Council can possibly arrange in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games

18 June - The World comes to Bexley's Big Weekend

This year's Danson Festival will feature an all-new Arts Village, helping to create a bigger, better and more diverse Festival than ever before.

18 June - A Bike Ride Back in Time

Cyclists with an interest in the past are invited to join a special Heritage Cycle Ride next weekend (24 June) following part of the route that Tour de France riders will take when they come through Bexley in July.

18 June - Traffic Arrangements during the Tour de France

Residents and businesses in the north of the borough are being advised to prepare for the effects of the Tour de France when it passes through on 8 July.

15 June - Bexley's Children Working Together for Malawi

Children from a number of Bexley's primary schools have got together to raise a phenomenal £10,750 for the charity Starfish Malawi. They will be handing over the money at a special presentation event next week (18 June).

14 June - Arts Festival Fun for Town Centre Visitors

There was dancing in the street last weekend (9 June) when the annual summer arts festival came to Bexleyheath. Along with dancers, children's performers and a 43-strong male voice choir there was a chance to paint, make kites, create mosaics and buy some of the arts and crafts on display.

14 June - New Life Skills to Beat the Bullies

Children from Primary Schools across Bexley got a taste of a new anti-bullying course at its launch earlier this month (4 June).

13 June - 'Undercover' Operation Results in an Arrest

A man has been arrested after the recent spate of thefts of drain covers from the gutters of Bexley's roads.

12 June - Parking Charges Set to Change London-wide

In line with the rest of London, Bexley's motorists will face a two-tier parking penalty system from 1 July, 2007.

8 June - Council Announces Emergency Rescue Package For Music Students

Bexley's Cabinet has given its backing to an emergency rescue package designed to help students of the Bexley Academy of Music and Performing Arts who are due to sit examinations next month.

8 June - Art in the Park by Bexley's Young People

A drab wall at Northumberland Heath Recreation Ground was hit by an explosion of colour last week (28 May - 1 June), thanks to an artistic young person from Howbury Youth Centre.

8 June - Cleeve Park on the Trail of a Royal Reward

Cleeve Park students on the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme have been presented with a trailer for use on their outdoor expeditions.

7 June - Bexley Wins Apology from Transport for London over Scrapping of Tidal Flow at Blackwall Tunnel

Transport for London has apologised to Bexley residents for its handling of the decision to scrap the tidal flow at the Blackwall Tunnel.

7 June - Library Users Do It Online

There has been a massive increase in the use of Bexley's new e-Library service following its re-launch earlier this year.

6 June - Bexley's Service for Wimbledon Mania

Every year, as Wimbledon draws near, tennis fever hits England and many people feel the urge to dust off their tennis rackets, dig out their training shoes and head for the nearest public courts in an attempt to emulate the skills of superstars such as Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Justine Henin.

5 June - Fined for Selling Alcohol to Underage Customers

A man has been fined £1,250 for selling alcohol to underage customers from his Bexleyheath store - after investigations by Bexley Council trading standards officers and the police.

5 June - Events for Carers' Week

To reach as many carers in Bexley as possible with information about support and advice on offer, Bexley Carers Services have organised a series of events to coincide with Carers' Week 2007 (11-17 June).

4 June - Bexley Academy of Music and Performing Arts

Bexley Council understands that today Bexley Academy of Music and Performing Arts has placed itself in liquidation.

1 June - Time for a Story at Slade Green Infant School

Little Miss Muffet, Mary Mary Quite Contrary and Old Mother Hubbard, were all guests of honour at Slade Green Infants School last Friday (25 May) when children enjoyed storytelling fun as part of their annual book event.

1 June - Community Claims Back its Alleyways

People in Blackfen are being urged to get behind the final phase of a large-scale clean-up operation in the town centre, which aims to help the community reclaim its local alleyways.
