Bexley's Youth Offending Team Needs You

Bexley's Youth Offending Team (YOT) is searching for volunteers to mentor and coach young offenders with their learning and reading, to help improve their educational prospects.

The team already has one permanent learning mentor. They now want to expand the service and use volunteers so that they can work with more young people. After some initial training, volunteers will be expected to commit to a small amount of time each week to support disengaged young people with their education.

Director of Children and Young Peoples Services, Deborah Absalom said: "We all want to reduce youth crime. Many of the young people the YOT deal with have poor reading skills, which is often a background factor to their offending. If we address this basic problem we can really impact on their ability to get back on the right track and cut crime."

Volunteers must have patience, good judgement and objectivity. They must be committed and reliable and have good listening and communication skills. They also need to be able to relate to young people. If this sounds like you, Paul Aruliah, YOT Education Worker would be delighted to hear from you. Please call him on 020 8284 5555.
