Bexley's Young Sports Stars Celebrate Their Success
Nearly 200 young sports stars had their achievements recognised at the London
Borough of Bexley's annual Young People's Sports Awards at Erith Leisure Centre
last week (2 February).
The Sports Development Team joined up with the two School Sports Partnerships
to celebrate the fantastic work taking place in Bexley schools.
During the event, two times Olympian and Bronze medal winner, kayaker Ian
Wynne, took to the stage with an inspirational presentation. After the event
Ian passed around his Olympic medal for young people to get a feel for what
the future could hold as well as signing autographs and having his picture
taken.
"This was a great event," says Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts
and Tourism, Cllr
Peter Catterall. "I continue to be impressed by the
amazing wealth of sporting talent we have in the borough. I congratulate them
all on their success. I hope that their achievements will encourage other young
people."
The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr
Nigel Betts, handed out the awards during the ceremony
that was attended by young people, teachers, family and friends.
The sporting categories awarded this year included young volunteers, endeavour
awards and national honours, recognising the 23 young people from Bexley that
are already competing at national and international events, along with some
of the top teams that competed for Bexley at the London Youth Games.
The awards also recognised the contribution individuals and schools make to
sports clubs outside normal curriculum time, as well as sports volunteers and
the borough's top school teams.
