Local Businesses Thanked for Their Work Experience

The London Borough of Bexley brought together employers and secondary school students earlier this month at a special event to celebrate the contribution employers make to Bexley's work experience programme.

More than 100 employers attended the event to receive thanks for their efforts in making the programme a success. Bexley's Education Business Partnership organise work experience for Bexley's schools and every year over 3,200 young people from Bexley take part.

The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Nigel Betts joined the Director of Children & Young People's Services, Deborah Absalom to present certificates to employers nominated by schools for their outstanding contribution to work experience .

"An increase in vocational qualifications and the development of diplomas will mean an even greater need for close partnership work with local businesses in the future," says Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle. "We are fortunate to have committed local employers who are happy to provide our young people with their first insight into the world of work and I thank them all for their continued support."

Students from Erith School who had placements at Morrisons in Erith gave a presentation about their experience and were presented with the Capita Work Experience Cup for excellence.

Beths Grammar School student, Harry Purcell read his winning News Shopper Challenge article on why employers should become involved with work experience. The article will be published in the News Shopper later this month.

The News Shopper Challenge competition was launched by Bexley's Education Business Partnership and invited students from secondary schools across the borough to write a 400-word article highlighting the importance of work experience. Harry won a £200 Bluewater voucher and the opportunity to see his article printed in the News Shopper.

Local businesses that would like to offer work experience placements to young people in the borough, or who would like to form business links with Bexley secondary schools can call 020 8836 8344 or 8345 for more information.
