It's All Happening In Crayford!
Crayford residents and businesses will have the chance to find out for themselves
about a series of major issues affecting the town centre next week.
CRAYFORD TOWN HALL DEVELOPMENT -
On 27, 28, 29 February and 1 March, there will be an exhibition of the proposed
major development on the site of Crayford Town Hall, Crayford Library and the
land to the rear, including a scale model of the scheme.
The exhibition is being held at the Crayford Pop-in Parlour in Waterside Gardens
in Crayford Way. It will be open from 10am to 5pm each day - and until 8pm
on Thursday 28 February.
Staff from the London Borough of Bexley will be joined by representatives
from the developer HFHA (Group) Ltd and Hyde Housing for the exhibition. Questionnaires
will be available for local people who would like to comment on the scheme.
The £30 million development will include new homes, new shops and new
community facilities around an attractive new town square, which will be designed
with landscaping and other features to create an attractive focal point and
meeting place for the local community.
Conditional contracts for the development were exchanged last September. Subject
to planning approval, work should start on site in 2009.
"We are looking forward to hearing the views of local people on the scheme," said
Cllr John Waters, Bexley's Cabinet member for Regeneration & Housing. "This
is the first chance to see a model of the development and for people to see
for themselves the scale of the transformation that's planned to fulfil the
tremendous potential of the site.
"These are exciting times for the town and I know that everyone who is
genuinely interested in helping the town and its people to prosper will be
keen to come along and find out more about the plans."
Cllr Melvin Seymour, one of the three Ward Councillors for Crayford added: "The
proposed Town Hall site development is long overdue and is further evidence
that Crayford is emerging from a black hole of under-investment. If approved
this development will afford the people of Crayford a new library, medical
centre and community facility, alongside new housing and a good quality restaurant.
I believe the scheme to be innovative and worthy of support for no other reason
than that to do nothing is to support a spiral of decay. Crayford has a long
and rich history of which it should be proud. It now has a future which I hope
people will embrace and support."
FLOOD RISK -
A public meeting is also being held in the town next week to present the findings
of a detailed study into the risks of flooding in the town centre and how this
will affect future development plans.
The meeting - which starts at 7:30pm on Friday 29 February in the Town Hall
- will outline the measures that will be needed to reduce the prospect of flooding.
The public meeting will also see the launch of public consultation on the
new Crayford Residential Design Code. The Code sets out the Council's aspirations
for the design of new housing in Crayford. Plans and sketches will be on display
at the meeting and Council officers will be there to explain them.
