Cabinet Recommends Below Inflation Council Tax Increase
The London Borough of Bexley's Cabinet recommended a Council Tax increase
below the rate of inflation for the second year running at its meeting last
night (25 February).
"We promised not to increase the Council Tax by more than the rate of
inflation for each of the four years of our administration and it is important
to us to keep that promise," said Cllr
Ian Clement, Leader of the Council. "Limiting
the burdens we place on those on fixed incomes and the less well-off is one
of our key objectives. That's why value for money is now at the heart of everything
we do."
If approved by the full Council at its meeting on 5 March, Bexley's Council
Tax will increase by 3%. With the setting of the precept for the Greater London
Authority at 2%, the actual increase in households' Council Tax bills for homes
in Bexley wil be 2.8%.
"Bexley's grant settlement from government has been in the worst in years,
but we are determined that the Council will live within its means," explains
Cllr Clement. "Our long-term plans are based on keeping our costs under
control and focussing our spending on the areas that matter most to local people:
promoting safety and improving the environment.
"Although we're focussed on keeping Council Tax bills down, people will
still benefit from improved services in key areas."
