Mr Clement informed the Council's Chief Executive of his decision yesterday
(5 May) and his resignation took effect immediately. The Deputy Leader of
the Council, Cllr
Teresa O'Neill, has taken over as Acting Leader until the
Annual Meeting of the Council on 14 May, when a new Leader will be elected
by all Members of the Council.
Cllr O'Neill commented: "I am very pleased that the new Mayor of London
has invited Ian to join his team. I have full confidence that he will do
his best to serve London well based on his work in Bexley & the Mayor's
team will benefit from having someone in the team with his experience of
Bexley. I have enjoyed working with Ian over the years and know that whoever
succeeds him permanently will look to build on what we have achieved over
the past two years."
The former Council Leader has been appointed as Deputy Mayor, responsible
for government relations both in the UK and the international arena. Holders
of such senior posts in local government are not permitted to serve as local
councillors.
