Six young people from Jubilee Primary School in Thamesmead had an extra special lesson in ICT this week as winners of Bexley’s Walk to School Week competition.

Their prize was to spend a morning recording their own advertisement at Time 106.8 FM’s studios in Abbey Wood. They also won a day for their whole class to train with Charlton Athletic FC players at the Charlton Athletic training ground.

Their advertisement will be broadcast across Bexley, Greenwich and Dartford each morning and afternoon, at peak school travel times, until the end of the month.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Cllr Peter Craske said: "It is great to see Bexley children really trying to convince their parents, peers and wider community to leave their cars at home. A reduction in cars on the school run would go a long way to making our environment safer and more enjoyable for everyone."

The competition was run by the London Borough of Bexley, Time 106.8FM and Charlton Athletic FC. It was open to all year 5 students in Bexley. They were asked to compile a 30 second radio advertisement aimed at encouraging children and parents to leave their cars at home. It had to contain sounds heard on the school run, so as to coincide with this year's national Walk to School Week theme of exploring the environment through sound and noise.

The children put newly learned skills to use, by recording their own script and sounds. Then, using recording software that they had recently been taught to use during ICT lessons, they edited and produced their entry.

Time FM’s breakfast show presenter Amy Casey said: "The kids did a marvellous job. I was amazed by the quality of their work and their passion to really get people out of their cars and walking or cycling to school."

Walk to School Week runs from 19 to 23 May and ties in with Noise Action Week, by exploring the links between noise and walking to school. So far, 56 Bexley schools have signed up to participate in the campaign. Each school will receive free promotional materials and take part in discussions and initiatives to encourage more people to leave the cars at home.

To listen to the winning advertisement, tune into Time 106.8FM during the school run times before the end of May.
