Bexley Selection Test Update

Full details of the new system for Selection Tests in the London Borough of Bexley from September this year have now been published.

Every year around 4,500 children from Bexley and surrounding areas take the selection tests. The changes will see year six children sitting two tests, Verbal Reasoning and Maths, rather than four. The tests will be held in September in the third week of the autumn term, rather than in November. This will mean that the results are known before secondary school preferences have to be made. This year’s test dates are 16 and 17 September.

Parents of children who do not attend primary schools in Bexley will need to register for their child to sit the tests by 18 July. They can request a registration form by calling the Admissions Team on 020 8294 6416.

Parents that have not received the information leaflet with the test details can find it here or can call the Admissions Team to request a copy.

"I would urge parents and carers to read the new leaflets carefully so they are aware of how the changes affect them,” says Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle.

"The changes have been designed to benefit children and parents, taking some of the pressure off when making that all important secondary school decision as well as reducing the number of tests our young people have to take. We aim to provide as much information as possible around the changes so that parents, carers and children are prepared.”

The changes will begin with children who will transfer to secondary school in September 2009. This affects children born between 1 September 1997 and 31 August 1998.

The changes came into place following extensive consultation with parents and teachers in the London Borough of Bexley.

Example questions will be provided to schools and parents for them to work through with children, and there are practice questions at the start of each test to enable all children to understand what is required. The example questions are also available on the website www.bexley.gov.uk/admissions.
