Bexleyheath Art And Jazz Festival

Bexleyheath summer festival of art and jazz will take place on Saturday 14 June. This year will see the activities extended from the Broadway pedestrian area, into some of the town's venues, and will link in with the film festival being held on 11 June at Cineworld Bexleyheath.

Cllr John Waters, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing said: "This is a really exciting time for Bexleyheath, with local talent and world class musicians drawing people to the town to enjoy music and arts. I urge people from all over Bexley and the south east to come and enjoy what Bexleyheath has to offer! "

The festival has been organised by the London Borough of Bexley’s Town Centre Management in partnership with the Arts Council, Bexley.

The main arts events will take place in the pedestrian area of the Broadway Bexleyheath. The Arts Council of Bexley will have marquees for their members to exhibit and sell their work from 10am. There will be a free Children's Marquee with interactive workshops in artwork, crockery painting and balloon modelling plus a face painter.

On the entertainment stage Sheer Lunacy and Tatter Coats in collaboration with Bohemian Events, who are based at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, will be performing throughout the day and will be staging an unique performance called the ‘Dragons Lair’ at 3pm which will include a 7ft high Dragon.

There will also be performances from Pelham School Choir, The Bob Hope Theatre who be performing Dr Seuss Cat in the Hat, The Lyra Greek Dancers, Streetwise and the Little Big Band from Bird College, Sidcup. (See timings and listings below).

Volunteers from Demelza Children’s Hospice will be running a cafe area.

Three Bexleyheath venues will be playing host to some world class jazz entertainers. Back in the 1940s the Red Barn Public House in Barnehurst became known as the home of the Jazz revival in England, hosting regular jazz evenings and it is hoped that the Bexleyheath Jazz Festival will raise its profile locally once more. To make this happen The Ivory Lounge, The King’s Arms and the Marriott Hotel will be carrying on the tradition by having live jazz acts playing throughout the afternoon and evening. All of the jazz festival events are free with no pre-booking required.

The much travelled Buster Birch with his piano trio will be at the Ivory Lounge. Buster has played in over 30 countries with some of the greats, and has a broad musical base that has seen him play in the Philharmonic Orchestras and appeared in countless West End stage productions.

The Jive Aces, a dynamic band who have performed on hundreds of TV and radio shows in over 25 countries, will also be performing at the Ivory Lounge during the afternoon and then in the Marriott Hotel in the evening.

The Dierdrie Davenport Group, with Dierdrie herself famed for her role in the 1980s on Rockschool and representing Great Britain in the European Jazz Festival, will be performing in the Kings Arms.

Local talent will also be given an opportunity to shine in their home town. Acts include a talented local soloist Katie Martin from Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, who was a finalist in the Bexley Young Musician of the Year competition, and the popular Little Big Band of Doreen Bird Music College - well known in the borough for their excellent performances.
