The London Borough of Bexley’s Cabinet last night approved a £1.3million
programme of works to be carried out to improve Belvedere Village shopping
area, public safety and facilities for pedestrians and public transport.
The cost of the project is being funded by Transport for London and will
include features such as the widening and paving of footways, CCTV cameras,
seating, speed tables to slow traffic, bus shelters, upgraded street lighting
and better pedestrian links between the car park, shopping area, splash pool
and recreational grounds.
Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “This is a major
investment in a key area of the borough, aimed at improving the environment
and promoting safety.
“We wanted to regenerate the Village and make it more accessible to
local people, giving it a nicer environment that is not overcrowded with
through traffic.
“We have consulted extensively with local residents and businesses
and we are confident that we are now able to provide them with a scheme that
reflects their aspirations.

“I am delighted that we have been able to secure such significant
funding for the scheme from Transport for London and I look forward to seeing
village life restored to Belvedere”.
Work on the scheme is programmed to commence in late summer 2008 and is
expected to be completed by early 2010.
