The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Nick O’Hare, presented 11 students from Woodside School with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards earlier this month.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award aims is to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach. The young people spent a year working towards the award that comprises four sections: volunteering, skills, physical activity and an expedition.
The group of year 11 students took part in activities including rock climbing, sailing, gardening at Hall Place and Woodlands Farm, walking and rowing.
To finish off the programme, the students went to Gilwell Park in Epping Forest where they planned and walked a 10km route, camped overnight, put up tents and cooked for themselves before taking part in a high ropes course.
The students were invited to a special ceremony in the Mayor’s Parlour to receive their awards. After the presentation of the certificates, the Mayor and Mayoress enjoyed tea with the group and their teachers who lead them through the Award.
