The London Borough of Bexley wants to hear what you think of its future
vision for dealing with the Borough’s waste.
Last year over 138,000 tonnes of waste were produced in Bexley and 44% of
this was landfilled. The amount of waste produced is likely to rise to nearly
160,000 tonnes by 2015 unless we take action now.
The Borough has produced a draft Waste Management Strategy 2008-2013. The
strategy outlines how we can make a difference and residents and businesses
are being invited to contribute by having their say.
"Our new recycling service is a first step towards reducing the amount
we landfill but we know that more can be done," says Cabinet Member
for the Environment, Cllr
Gareth Bacon. "This is a chance for local
people to say how they feel about how we dispose of their waste and what
more we could do to help them recycle. We have an excellent recycling record
in Bexley and we know, from talking to residents and businesses, that this
is a subject close to many people's hearts. I would encourage people to have
their say and let us know what we could do to make Bexley even greener."
New legislation, environmental issues and rising costs mean that alternatives
to landfill must be found. There is an urgent need to manage waste in more
sustainable ways, treating it as a resource from which as much value as possible
should be extracted.
The draft Waste Management Strategy for the London Borough of Bexley plans
to:
Reduce waste growth
Encourage the reuse of items
Increase our recycling rate to 50% by 2015
Reduce the amount of biodegradable waste landfilled to meet the
European landfill directive targets
Divert waste to new treatment facilities to recover material
or energy or both
Questions in the consultation range from how important residents think it
is to recycle and reuse to the accessibility of recycling facilities and
the transportation methods used to dispose of our waste. The closing date
for responses is 17 July.
