The London Borough of Bexley has secured a Sport England lottery grant of £161,000
to help fund a number of new fun sporting activities across the borough.
The first of the new programmes start this summer at Erith Rowing Club, Erith
Yacht Club and Danson Water Sports Centre.
For those who may prefer to stay on land, a new programme of dance activities
start in the Autumn with a range of styles to suit all tastes, from ballroom
to street dance.
There will also be opportunities for local businesses to enter teams in inter-company
sports competitions featuring less traditional pastimes, such as non-contact
rugby, korfball and softball.
Parents also get the chance to join in the fun. The new 'Sidelined Project'
at selected venues across the Borough has been designed specifically for parents
that have to wait for their children when they take part in sports.
"Taking up a new sport or activity is a great way of meeting new friends,
getting involved and keeping fit,"says Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts
and Tourism, Cllr
Peter Catterall. "This funding has allowed us to organise
a range of diverse fun activities and I hope that we will see people from across
the borough turning up and having a go."
Only 19% of adults living in Bexley currently reach the recommended 30 minutes
of sport and physical activity three times a week. The lottery grant will help
more people get involved and have sporting fun by funding the new activities
aimed at people over 16 years old.
Additional funding to support these new and exciting projects has been received
from Pro-Active East London, Bexley Care Trust, Capita and the Kent RFU.
