Transport - The Vision Continues
The London Borough of Bexley has published a
scrutiny report (621KB, PDF document) which supports
the Council's campaign for improved transport options.
During the nine-month review, Councillors heard from key transport providers
and considered major transport and infrastructure developments planned for London
and the Thames Gateway.
Cllr Melvin Seymour, Chairman of the Scrutiny Sub-Group, said: "Our conclusions
are clear: we need urgent investment in Bexley to improve the transport options
for residents and to help regenerate the borough. All the major transport schemes
planned for London and the Thames Gateway fall short of reaching us. If we want
to be an attractive prospect for companies, be less reliant on cars and protect
our environment, we need to be able to offer realistic alternatives.
"Regeneration schemes in the Thames Gateway and in particular those close
to us at Ebbsfleet, should be providing us with exciting opportunities, but with
the lack of investment in Bexley we are just not in a position to seize the benefits.
Compared with other London boroughs our residents are just not getting a fair
deal."
Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Transport added: "This is an important
report that sets out in detail why we need to see a much better public transport
system for Bexley. Cllr Seymour and his colleagues have worked hard on this project
and I hope we can all see this vision delivered in the coming years."
All 63 of Bexley's Councillors backed a motion in July 2007 setting out the
strategic public transport improvements that make up Bexley's Vision for Transport.
