Bexley's boys hockey team who scooped second place at the games

Young athletes from Bexley beat off stiff competition last weekend (5 and 6 July) to come fifth in the 31st London Youth Games held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

More than 500 young people represented the borough in the annual event that sees 22,000 young people take part in sports over a six week period. This year was one of the closest ever with only 22 points separating first from fifth place.

Highlights for Bexley included gold medals in weightlifting, girl's artistic gymnastics, boy's floor and vault gymnastics as well as silver medals in aquathlon, diving and boy's hockey.

Some teams reached new highs for the borough including a fourth in trampolining, fifth place in boy's athletics and fifth in the girl's basketball.

The Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Nick O'Hare and Leader of the London Borough of Bexley, Cllr Teresa O'Neill joined Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Schools, Adult Education and Youth Services, Cllr Simon Windle, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Culture, Cllr Peter Catterall and Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Cllr June Slaughter, Cllr Linda Bailey and Cllr Alan Downing at the finals weekend to show support for the borough's talented squad.

Cllr Catterall said; "What a fantastic event! My congratulations go to all of the young people involved in the games. We are fortunate to have a wealth of young sporting talent in Bexley for which this event is the ideal showcase. The first class sportsmanship and skills shown by these young people make them a credit to the borough."

Matthew Roberts, the Regional Director of Parkwood Leisure also came along to the games to show his support for the Bexley youngsters.

The Bexley kit was designed by the London Borough of Bexley and sponsored by Parkwood Leisure.
