After 10 long weeks of walking 10,000 steps a day the London Borough of
Bexley's Fit For Work Challenge came to an end earlier this month.
The walkers raised an impressive £1,000 for the Bexley Crossroads
'Stepping Out' appeal, which helps young carers in Bexley to get out and spend
time with their friends.
London Borough of Bexley's Internal Communications Officer, Vanessa Walker
said, “The walkers have all done extremely well, everyone feels much fitter
and some have lost weight. We all intend on carrying on walking even though the
challenge has officially ended. With the huge price increases in fuel costs we
have also noticed the change in our pockets.”
Darren Tobin, Chief Executive of Bexley Crossroads attended the celebration
to receive the sponsorship cheque. He said; “This makes a real difference
to the lives of the young carers in Bexley. We are hoping to use the money, along
with the funds raised last year by the Mayor of Bexley as his nominated charity,
to create a new role to help young carers get out and about and have some time
to themselves.”
The Fit for Work Challenge asked participants to walk 10,000 steps a day for
10 weeks and was designed to encourage fitness in the workplace. The Marriott
Hotel, Bexleyheath provided free membership of the fitness centre for the 20
participants for the duration of the programme.
Bexley Care Trust, Social Care Assistant, Janet Gould won the prize draw held
for all the successful walkers who completed the full 10 weeks. Janet won a meal
and overnight stay at The Marriott.
Kevin Toal from the Emergency Planning team raised over £250, and was
rewarded with a voucher for well earned massage at the Marriott’s Spa for
raising the most sponsorship during the challenge.
The intrepid walkers were rewarded with a buffet lunch at The Marriott Hotel,
Bexleyheath.
