Progress Made in Provision for Older People and Those With Learning Disabilities
Plans to progress with the establishment of new local services for older
people, as well as for those with learning disabilities, were given the green
light by the London Borough of Bexley at its Public Cabinet meeting on 22 July.
The project, which continues the Council’s strong relationship with
two local service providers, MCCH and Kent Community Housing Trust (KCHT), proposes
the provision of new 80 bed and 60 bed homes for older people in Welling and
Erith. New accommodation for 13 residents and tenants with learning disabilities
in Erith and modern day facilities for people with learning disabilities and
the local community in Sidcup are also proposed.
Cllr Sharon Massey, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: "This
project strengthens local partnerships and our relationship with two well established
providers. We are delighted to be moving forward with the plans and look forward
to providing the kind of services that people in Bexley will want and value.
"The emphasis throughout the development of the project will be the protection
of dignity, provision of privacy, choice and respect. We want people to be able
to choose how they want to live and to be treated with respect. All of these
services will be in high quality surroundings and will be flexible to meet the
changing needs of local people.
"It is a major and exciting project of service improvement for some of
the most vulnerable people in the borough. Accommodation and day facilities will
be built to a high and comfortable standard fit for the 21st century."
KCHT and MCCH both have 10 year contracts with the London Borough of Bexley.
KCHT's contract began in 2000 and MCCH's began in 2002. Both contracts were achieved
as a result of a vigorous tendering process.
