Have Your Say on The Removal of BT Payphones

The London Borough of Bexley has the 'First Notification' decision to accept BT’s proposal to remove seven payphones in Bexley. The Council has considered the views from the first general consultation, held in June and July, and agreed to BTs plans because they are little used. They would now like to hear the views of local residents, businesses and community organisations, on their decision to accept BTs plans.

The payphones are at -

  • Northall Road, Barnehurst
  • Bridgen Road, Bexley (Blue Anchor public house)
  • Crayford Manor House/AEC, Mayplace Road East, Crayford
  • Junction of London Road and Old Road, Bexleyheath
  • Outside 'The Dell' Playground, opposite 135 Crayford Way, Crayford
  • Willersley Avenue, Sidcup
  • Parkhurst Road/Parkhill Road, Bexley

Comments must be made in writing by Monday, 1 September.

  • By email to: zohreh.pezeshk@bexley.gov.uk
  • By fax to: 020 8308 7887
  • In writing to: Strategic Planning and Development, London Borough of Bexley, Wyncham House, 207 Longlands Road, Sidcup DA15 7JH

The Council will take into account comments received during the consultation when deciding whether to continue to accept BT’s proposals.

According to BT, the use of payphones across the country is declining - the number of calls has halved in the last three years. BT have to provide a reasonable number of working phone boxes where they are most needed, but need to strike a balance between providing an effective service and running a viable payphone business.

According to the telecommunications regulator Ofcom, 33% of adults use phone boxes from time to time. They are most popular with young people, people on low incomes and people with no home phones, or no phones at all. Payphones also provide a useful service for visitors and a means of making 999 calls.
