The London Borough of Bexley's Leader, Cllr Teresa O'Neill and Cllr Colin Tandy were given a guided tour of Bexley's fire stations last week by Cyril O'Brien, Borough Commander Bexley and Ian Hughes, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, London Fire Brigade.

The borough has three fire stations; Bexley, Erith and Sidcup. The Sidcup station is in the middle of an expansion programme to house an additional appliance along with firefighters to operate it. The original fire station is also being modernised and work is due to be completed in early 2009.

Cllr O'Neill, said: "Our two organisations work so closely on many initiatives in the borough. I am grateful for the work the fire service does to ensure Bexley is a safe place to live.

"It's lovely to see for ourselves what is going on with our partner organisations and it was very interesting to talk to the DAC, the Borough Commander and staff at the fire stations.

"We welcome the expansion of Sidcup fire station - it is great news for everyone in the borough. We will have increased fire cover and the firefighters will have up-to-date facilities to work in."

Cyril O'Brien, who incidentally went to primary school with Cllr O'Neill, only took up his post as the Borough Commander Bexley in July said: "I have been delighted to see the joined up thinking in Bexley. The partnership in the borough is very strong and supportive over a range of issues.

"Engagement at all levels of the community is taken seriously by every agency and by working together to pool the borough resources we can really improve the lives of the local community.

"I look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnerships in the coming months especially as our busiest times; Halloween, Guy Fawkes and New Year, are fast approaching."
