Bexley is celebrating a triple success in this year's prestigious London in Bloom competition.
At the annual awards ceremony on Friday 19 September, Bexley picked up three awards:
- One: Danson Park took first place for the second year running in the public park and open spaces category.
- Two: The borough secured a silver gilt award in the City category.
- Three: Local resident Mr Donald Lee of Footscray Lane won third place in the Best Front Garden Award.
"We are delighted with our two awards and I would like to congratulate Mr Lee on his well-deserved success, which was achieved against hundreds of green-fingered people from across the capital," said Cllr Gareth Bacon, the Council's Cabinet member for the Environment. "Maintaining and improving the local environment is one of our top priorities and this kind of success would not be possible without fantastic teamwork involving Councillors, officers, our contractors and the friends of the parks. Everyone involved can take great pride in what we've achieved."
The awards were collected by the Mayor of the London Borough of Bexley, Cllr Nick O'Hare, who said afterwards: "It was a pleasure and a privilege to have received the awards on behalf of our Borough."
Recent months have seen a new look for Danson Park's popular Old English Garden, which now features a range of herbaceous borders. These provide all-year round colour, as well as being more wildlife and environmentally friendly.
The park has something for everyone, including an exciting modern playground, a wide range of recreational and sporting opportunities on land and water, a local nature reserve, two refreshment kiosks, along with high standards of horticultural maintenance - and all set within a historic parkland setting.
