Keeping Bexley Safe
Residential Burglary
Bexley Community Safety Partnership work hard to reduce the incidents
of domestic burglary.
leaflet (234KB, pdf file),
which gives information on how you can protect your home and property from
burglars. A combination of target hardening, environmental improvements (you
may want to consider alleygates
and lighting), and diversionary activities can lead to noticeable improvements.
Joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme can also help, and contacting
your local Safer Neighbourhoods Policing team will allow
you to gain a valuable insight into how to protect your property from burglars.
The 'Bobby' Van Project
The Partnership, led by our voluntary partner Victim Support
Bexley, recognised that target hardening could have a significant impact on burglary
reduction. As a result of a successful bid to the National Lottery, the ‘Bobby
Van’ was born: a carpenter and van equipped with top quality locks and security
devices, who can secure the homes of burglary victims and those at risk of victimisation
free of charge, dependent on need. In the first year of its operation the Bobby
Van, which is managed by Victim Support Bexley, secured 750 homes in the Borough.

Because of its success, the Bobby Van project has been increased to two vans
- both carpenters are police vetted for added confidence to residents. The
carpenters are now working in the Community Safety Action Zones to secure the
homes of vulnerable people in 'hot spot' areas, in order to make the
area less susceptible to burglary. You can contact us regarding the 'Bobby
Van' Project on 0800 389 5013.
Please note, that if the Bobby Van carpenter considers your locks to be of
adequate quality they will not replace them.
In addition to the work of the carpenters, Bexley Police conducts regular
operations that impact both in the short and long term on burglary incidents.
In the past these have included crime prevention campaigns on raising awareness
of home and personal security (particularly in the vulnerable summer months
and the weeks preceding Christmas), a home security conference, property marking
campaigns, development of a ‘Secure
by Design’ programme, growth in the number of Neighbourhood Watches and
through intelligence-led policing the apprehension of prolific known burglars.
