Drug related courses
Drugs One - one day course
This is a mandatory course if you wish to take part in any of our other training
Drugs One is an introduction to drugs and will give the participant with
an understanding of various drugs, drug culture and some of the treatments available
to drug and alcohol users in the local area.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the types of drugs commonly used
- Describe the effects these drugs may have
- Understand why people use drugs
- Gain a knowledge of local services
- Gain an understanding of harm minimisation
- Gain an understanding of the basic principles of motivational approaches
to change.
Dates
Parental Drug and Alcohol Use and Risk Assessment – two
day course
You must have attended Drugs One in order to attend this course
This course is specifically designed for Social Workers or those in a similar
role, working with drug or alcohol users who are parents or carers.
Learning Objectives
- Develop an awareness of drugs and alcohol and their effects, both psychologically
and behaviourally, in relation to caring for children
- To develop and improve practice skills in relation to the assessment of
parents and carers who misuse drugs and alcohol
- Examination of the SCODA guidelines to use in the assessment of drug using
parents/carers
- Intervention skills with families to reduce the risk of harm

Substance Use and the Law – one day course
You must have attended Drugs One in order to attend this course
Learning Objectives
- Laws and guidelines for drug use on premises
- Laws and guidelines relating to the possession of drugs on premises
- Legal processes for drug using offenders
- Point of arrest onwards
- Court system and prison system plus support in prison
Dates
Using SMART (Substance Misuse Awareness Raising Tool) - (Working
with young people to identify their drug and alcohol related needs) - one
day course
You must have attended Drugs One in order to attend this course
Learning Objectives
- Learn more about patterns of drug use amongst young people
- To use SMART effectively
- To refer young people to substance misuse and other services appropriately
- To offer ongoing support, as appropriate, to young people who do not wish
to be referred to another service
- To distribute relevant and appropriate resources regarding substance use
to young people
- To establish useful links with other professionals working with young people
locally
