Carer & Toddler Groups
What is a carer & toddler group?
Carer and toddler groups are usually based in the community. They are open at regular times a week for a couple of hours and are used as social venues for parents/carers and children.
What do they provide?
Generally carer and toddler groups are established for the following groups:
- First time parents/carers.
- Young parents/carers.
- Single parents/carers (including single fathers/carers).
- Parents/carers of children with special needs.
- Childminders.
- Nannies/au-pairs.
- Grandparents.
The majority only operate in term time and provide an opportunity for children to play with different equipment and interact with other children. It also gives parents/carers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position to themselves. There are many advantages in attending a carer and toddler group for both you and your children.
- They allow your children to socialise with others.
- Children have the opportunity to play with new toys and join in new fun activities.
- Gives you the opportunity to socialise with other carers and so avoid the isolation that looking after children often involves. You can meet people who are in similar situations and so find support and meet friends.
- Sometimes professionals such as childcare workers drop in for advice and support purposes and answer any concerns or queries you may have.
Ages catered for
Most of these groups cater for carers and those under fives but also welcome expectant mums.
Registration
These groups do not have to be registered as parents/carers do not leave the children unattended. You stay with the child you are caring for and take responsibility for them at all times.
If there is not a group in your area and you would like to help to establish one, please contact the Extended Services In and Around Schools team, who will be able to advise you on the procedure.
Staffing/Qualifications
Carer and toddler groups are mainly voluntary and so depend on the help of volunteers to run them. Childcare training is available free of charge for those wishing to run or manage carer and toddler groups in Bexley through the Workforce Development team who will be happy to assist you with any further details.
Cost/Allocation of places
Carer and toddler groups are not expensive and may include refreshments for both you and the children you bring with you.
So how do I select a carer and toddler group?
Issues to consider
- What sort of equipment and play materials are offered?
- Is it close to your home or near good public transport?
- How many children are there?
- How much involvement is expected from you the parent/carer?
- Is there a safe play area?
- Is it accessible for children or parents/carers with special needs?
- What is the age range of children there?
- Could you take your older children along in the school holidays?
- Do you and your child feel relaxed and comfortable there?
