Our Culture:
A Cultural Strategy for the London Borough of Bexley 2003-2008
The
Cultural Vision for Bexley
What is clear is how pervasive and important cultural provision and activity
is within the life of the Borough. It is not just important for its own sake,
but as an integral part of dealing with broader issues of health, social services,
education, environmental protection, regeneration and community development.
It is also clear that culture is not - and must not be seen as - individual
and separate elements (the arts, sport, libraries etc.), but as an interwoven
and fundamental fabric and backdrop to the quality of life and identities of
the Borough's residents and communities.
Based on this a common purpose and vision for the future development of culture
in Bexley has been developed. The vision statement below sets out the rationale
and priorities for the development of culture over the next five years. It
is a vision statement developed by the Council and by the many partners - voluntary
and statutory - involved in delivering cultural opportunities, or for whom
culture can make a contribution to their own agendas.
"We
will develop cultural opportunities and activities to improve health, promote
social inclusion, develop skills throughout life, contribute to the safety,
economy and wealth of the Borough, and develop an individual and community
sense of worth and identity.
We will do this by:
- maximising the impact and contribution of culture to address the key needs
and identified priorities of the Borough, as set out in the Community Strategy;
- maintaining and developing the cultural infrastructure of the Borough
to protect and enhance its quality of life;
- promoting the culture of Bexley, to revitalise its image and to
provide a clear and dynamic identity for the Borough."
