What children are learning at school
Just because a school is teaching children about drugs or alcohol does not
mean the school has a drug or alcohol problem.
Schools have a responsibility to provide drug education and consider their
response to drug misuse. They do this by working in partnership with parents,
health and social services, police and other agencies. Drug education should include:
illegal drugs, medicines, alcohol, tobacco and volatile substances, such as glue.
Schools are encouraged to draw up drug education policies, involving parents
in the development of their policy on drugs and keeping them informed as to what
their child will learn and when.

A pragmatic and realistic approach acknowledges that no conceivable approach
will stamp out drug-taking altogether. It is a complex area and there are many
reasons involved in the decision to take drugs. However, it is becoming clearer
that drug education, based on lessons from research, delivered in the proper context
and in the appropriate way has the potential to reduce drug misuse or at least
to delay the onset of experimentation.
