Strategy for Supporting Schools and Other Educational Settings in Combating Racism

The Council has devised a strategy for providing support guidance for schools and other educational settings, including youth centres and nurseries in Bexley, on combating racism. A draft was published for consultation for which the deadline for responses was 31 July 2005.

Bexley Council's overall vision for social improvement is about enabling the people of Bexley to be proud of their Borough and to work together to create a rich, vibrant and inclusive society which values all people equally. This includes increasing participation in educational activities and raising the achievement of all children and young people in Bexley schools, nurseries, youth centres and other educational settings.

If that vision is going to mean anything, we must recognise the need to be proactive in the work that we do to ensure that minority ethnic children and young people are able to learn in a safe and stimulating environment and are able to reach their full potential.

Combating RacismThe Council is currently considering the responses to consultation and expects to publish the final strategy, together with guidance and a new racist incident reporting form, later in the Autumn. The outcomes of the consultation will also be published in due course.
