Education of
Children Living in Care
Education is our Future
Post 16 Education
Young people living in care, like all young people, should be encouraged
to consider moving on to Further and Higher Education. The Young
People's Resource Service (16+), previously known as Leaving Care Service,
are active in promoting educational opportunity and a representative from the
education team usually attends the 'Tuesday drop-in' in the Howbury
Centre on
a fortnightly basis to give advice and support on post 16 education.
Schools are increasingly expected to provide alternative programmes for young
people not required to follow a more formal academic route. Under the government's
14-19 curriculum drive many more opportunities should now be available,
such as ASDAN awards and entry level examinations. Use the PEP to find out about
what is on offer at your child's school.
Bexley has a range of Sixth
Form Opportunities and there are colleges local
to the area. The resource pack 'Preparing for Change' includes
a section for students on finding and preparing for further/ higher education.
Pupil and Student Finance can offer information
about grants and awards including the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
