Bexley SACRE

Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education

Introduction

Bexley's Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education meet once a term,. which may be in a school, a place of worship or the Council Chamber. SACRE considers all matters associated with RE and Collective Worship in schools and is interested in the spiritual, moral and ethical development of all pupils.

They work to keep themselves informed of developments in RE and associated matters, and about the different faiths Bexley's pupils study. They regularly enjoy presentations from teachers on how they approach the teaching of RE in their schools, and have visited infant, primary, secondary and special schools.

Each year, they note trends in the exam results for secondary schools, study reports from the Chief Inspector and look at national guidance to see if there are ways in which they can support improvements in schools, or can improve their own work as a SACRE.

Bexley SACRE publish a annual report on their work.

The Legal Situation of Religious Education (RE)

The Education Act (1996) requires:

  • RE to be taught to all pupils in full time education in LA schools. This includes children in reception classes, post-16 students and those with special educational needs.

  • RE to be taught according to the LA agreed syllabus, (except in aided schools).

  • RE to play its full part along with other subjects and aspects of school life, and collective worship in 'providing for the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils'.

  • The agreed syllabus to reflect the fact that the religious traditions of Great Britain are in the main Christian, whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in the UK.

Every LA is required by law to have a SACRE. The responsibilities of the SACRE are:

  • To provide advice to the LA on all aspects of its provision for RE in its schools, (this does not include voluntary aided schools).

  • To decide whether the LA's agreed syllabus for RE needs to be reviewed and to require the LA to do so.

  • To provide advice to the LA on collective worship in its schools.

  • To consider any requests from head teachers to lift the requirement to provide collective worship that is not of a broadly Christian character.

  • To advise on matters relating to training for teachers in RE and collective worship.
