Secondary Selection Tests

In Summer 2007, the Council consulted on some proposed changes to the selection tests in order to be able to publish results before parents have to submit secondary school application forms in October. The final decision on the changes was made in December 2007, and you can read the report here: Selection Test Decision December 2007 (49KB, PDF file)

The arrangements for 2008 are as follows:

Year 6 children will take two multiple choice tests in Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics
The tests will be held on Tuesday 16 September and Wednesday 17 September
Results will be posted to parents by first class post on 16 October 2008
The closing date for secondary school application forms to be submitted is Friday 24 October.

Children attending Bexley primary schools, apart from the Catholic primary schools and the primary section of the Business Academy, will automatically be included in the testing process.

If your child attends a Catholic primary school or the primary section of the Business Academy and you wish your child to take the tests, you will need to let the Head Teacher of the school know in writing by 27 June 2008 and arrangements will then be made for your child to sit the tests.

If your child attends an independent school or a primary school outside Bexley, you must register for the tests by telephoning the School Admissions Team on 020 8294 6416 or by e-mailing admissions.els@bexley.gov.uk to request a registration form. You can do this from 1 May 2008, and completed forms must be returned by 18 July 2008. Registration forms received after this date will not be accepted.

Example questions will be provided to schools and parents for them to work through with children, and there are practice questions at the start of each test to enable all children to understand what is required. Formal familiarisation sessions will no longer be held. Children should be able to tackle the tests using the knowledge and skills they have learnt during normal school lessons.

The example questions will be available early in the summer term and will be sent to parents on request and when they register a child to sit the tests. You will also be able to download them from this web page.
